How does this calculator work?
Enter the starting balance, any equal periodic contributions along the way (or $0 if it was a single lump sum), the number of years, and the ending value.
Since there's no algebraic formula to solve for a rate directly when contributions are involved, the calculator finds it numerically, narrowing in on the rate that makes the compounding math balance exactly. Solving for the rate is the inverse of a future value projection: instead of assuming a return, you recover the one that actually connects a beginning and ending balance. That makes it a quick reality check on any compound-growth assumption before you rely on it.

How the numbers work
Doubling in 10 years implies a 7.177% annual return, close to the well-known "Rule of 72" quick estimate (72 ÷ 10 years ≈ 7.2%), which is why that shortcut works reasonably well for this kind of doubling question.
If you'd also made periodic contributions along the way, the calculator would solve a more complex equation than a simple doubling formula, but the same underlying principle applies: it finds the one constant rate consistent with every number you entered.

Why can't this be solved with a simple formula?+
When contributions are involved alongside a starting and ending balance, the equation connecting them to a rate has no closed-form algebraic solution. It has to be solved numerically, narrowing in on the answer through repeated approximation, similar to solving for a bond's yield to maturity.
What does it mean if no rate solves for my inputs?+
It means the numbers you entered aren't mutually consistent under any realistic rate, most often because the ending value is lower than what the starting balance and contributions alone would suggest, even at a 0% return.
Is the result an annualized rate?+
Yes. If you selected annual contributions/periods it's already an annual rate; if you selected monthly or quarterly, the calculator annualizes the per-period rate for you (multiplying by the number of periods per year, the standard nominal-rate convention).
