Bridge Marina's Cost of Boat Ownership Calculator

Bridge Marina has created a cost of ownership calculator for boats that helps individuals calculate the total cost of owning a boat and taking up the hobby of boating.  Here's what this calculator offers and calculates:

  • Total cost of ownership in Year's 1 and 2 based on projections the user enters.
  • Breakdown of total cost's associated with owning a boat (the list is too extensive to mention here)
  • Projected cost of belonging to the Bridge Marina Boating Club
  • Rent vs Own boat comparison in order to help the user make the best decision between owning and renting.

Why We Love It

This is a fantastic tool to help the prospective boat owner evaluate all costs associated with owning a boat.  If you were thinking of buying a boat, would you think about costs associated with winterizing your boat?  We didn't think so...but this cost of ownership calculator helps the user think about all of the costs associated with owning a boat.  A few other items include miscellaneous repairs, engine tune up, and dock slip rental.

Sailo's Cost of Boat Ownership Calculator

Sailo's Cost of Boat Ownership is a great tool to once again help calculate a boat's cost of ownership.  It really helps the user understand all costs associated with ownership.  Sailo is a online marketplace to rent out individually owned boats similar to an airbnb for rental properties and so they have a calculator attached that helps the user estimate income they could receive from "chartering" their boat on Sailo.

Here's what else is calculated/offered by Sailo's cost of ownership calculator.

  • A complete breakdown of costs including financing, insurance, taxes, etc etc.
  • Charting and graphing capabilities based on inputs entered into the calculator
  • Rent vs Buy evalution in order to determine most cost effective method of boating

Why We Love It

We think Sailo's calculator tool is a great way to be sure to factor in all costs associated with owning a boat.  We also like Sailo's user interface and can tell a lot of care went into creating this online calculator.  Sailo also provides a way for people to make money off of boat's that may sit idle for part of the year by renting it out to other boaters.  That's a pretty great concept.

Digital Credit Union's Boat Affordability Calculator

Digital Credit Union has created an online boat affordability calculator that helps users evaluate how much their next boat should potentially cost based on what they can afford.  Here's what this online calculator calculates/offers:

  • Inputs that allow the user to think about sources of income in order to purchase a boat (trade in value, down payment, etc.)
  • Calculates loan cash
  • Calculates available cash

Why We Love It

This boat calculator resource does leave some things to be desired...like how much boat loan can I afford based on my data inputs.  However, we have to give them props (no pun intended) for getting their users to think about where funding for their next boat purchase will come from.

Mercury Racing's Prop Slip Calculator

Prop slip is one of the most important items that gives a boat its thrust.  Slip refers to the difference between actual and theoretical distance traveled based on or resulting from a propeller's angle.  This calculator essentially allows the user to enter their propeller's pitch, gear ratio, engine rpm, actual speed, and then calculate their boat's propeller slip.

Why We Love It

Calculating the ideal metrics from which a boat will be its most efficient is great the boat's engine, the boater's pocket book, and the environment.  It is a win win win as far as we are concerned.

Weather.gov's Wind Chill Calculator

Weather.gov's wind chill calculator is a great resource for boaters for obvious reasons.   After entering temperature and wind speed's, here's what this wind chill calculator helps the user calculate:

  • Fahrenheit equivalent temperature adjusted for wind chill
  • Celsius equivalent temperature adjusted for wind chill

Why We Love It

This calculator provides a great resource to help people dress accordingly when preparing for a boating trip.  By understanding what speeds a boat will be traveling, a wind chill can be estimated and the boater can be prepared for whatever weather their boat gives them.  We also love that this calculator allows the user to enter temperatures in Fahrenheit or Celsius as well as wind speeds in knots, mph, m/s, and k/h.

Sea-Seek's Distance Calculator on Google Maps

Sea Seek's mapping tool is a great resource.  Even if someone isn't a boater, this tool could be useful for many different things...its that cool.  Let's say that a boater wanted to map out their travels for the day and estimate distance, and time that the trip would take.  That's difficult to do since there aren't signs in the middle of the lake that tell the boater how many miles they are from their destination.

What Sea Seek's tool allows a person to do is to calculate distance in nautical miles between two points or three points or as many points as a person chooses.  If a person is on a windy and curvy lake, its not as simple as calculating a direct line distance between point A and point B.  This tool allows a person to do just that.

Why We Love It

This tool essentially allows its user to draw shapes and lines on top of a Google Map and automatically calculates latitude and longitude while also calculating distances in nautical miles for the user.  A super helpful tool for those that need something like this.

Boat-Fuel-Economy.com's Fuel Consumption Calculator

Boat-fuel-economy.com is a really great resource for calculating and projecting a boat engine's fuel economy and consumption for a boat outing.  If a person knows how many gallons per hour their boat consumes and they know roughly how fast their boat travels, then this calculator calculates a boats miles per gallon.  From there, a user can try to solve ways to improve their boats fuel efficiency by tweaking certain factors.

Why We Love It

This calculator tool is chalk full of useful information about boat engines.  They have a complete list of boat engines from Johnson to Evinrude to Mercury with each engine's stats on it's HP and RPMs.  On top of that, they have a really great user interface that should be fun for any boat efficianado to use.

Conclusion

We hope this list of resources comes in handy on your next boat outing.
